FGB8 Tourney - Game1 - Leagues of Votann

The first game I play with EGATROT, currently placed 27 in Polish ranking. I was told that he is a strong player. He has played Leagues of Votann for a while and his main army is Tyranids. On the other hand, I’m playing tyranids and do know almost nothing about Votanns, lol. Looking like an uphill battle for me, but let’s not waste any more time and get right into action!

We play Mission 12 (Arfks of Omen) (diagonal deployment, 5 objectives, actions for explosives)


Secondaries:

Tyranids: Engage on all fronts, Interrogation, No prisoners

Votanns: Engage, Bring it down, Grind them down


Deployment:

Egatrot deploys safely, 20-squat strong blob of warriors with both Hearthguard units behind the corner ruin with both characters (Khal is not hidden from sight to toss tokens). Bikers are at the deployment line on the left, center and right, ready for redeployment. Small closer ruin is occupied by 10-squat warriors unit along with Thunderkin unit. Second Thunderkins are in strategic reserves.

I deploy tyant guards out of LoS with tyrants close to them and a little behind. Hormies go 1 unit to the small ruin with tyrants and 2 units to the large corner ruing along with zoeys and Neurothrope. 2 Carnifexes find a blind spot on the left flang, while third goes to the right flang with tyrants in an attempt to make an overlapping arks of fire:) 2 units of pyrovores board a tyrannocyte. I stretch one unit of hormagants so that there is no place to deepstrike turn 1 in me deployment and no way to target tyrants with shooting after deepstrike as well.




I win the roll for turn 1. Nor good nor bad, cause opponent deployed safely and out of position to deal any substantial damage turn 1.


Redeployment. Bikes in the center come closer and hide behind the central ruin. Left flank bikes retreat closer to warriors, while rightmost bikes hide behind the rightmost ruin on the objective in the no mans land. Actually, not the greatest decision, cause both units are exposed to a charge from my hormagaunts!


Turn 1: Tyranids

I switch on 5+++ from mortals and +1 to psychic Imperative (from Neurothrope).

Direct guidance (+1 to-hit) and rr 1’s on the central hormagaunt unit. Warp syphon (3 dice for psychic) on Neurothrope. One Carnifex gets rr 1’s as well.

I roll a lucky 6 advance for the rightmost hormies, jumping right on the rightmost objective and within 6 inch charg to the bikes.

Central unit for 1 CP auto-advances 6, getting into 7 inch charge range to the central hidden bikes unit.

On the left flank I get LoS on leftmost bikes with 1 Carnifex and hide second on the objective. 

Tyrant guards get the position on a vent with both tyrants behind. I spread third hormagaunt unit so no one can deepstrike behind the backs of my bugs:)


Magic.

Onslaught on hormagaunts, 5+++ FnP on tyrant guards and Poisonous influence (mortals on 6 wound in close combat) for central hormagaunts and no actual smites due to safe opponent’s deployment.

And successful Interrogation as well.

Shooting. I can take down 2 bikes on the right with Shardgullet and one Carnifex, effectively increasing the charge range to 8.

On the left Carnifex takes out of action one more bike.


Assault!

I make both charges, wiping out full bike squad in the center and last biker on the right. I can not remember, how come I’ve spent all CP’s until the moment, but have nothing left for overrant, so both hormagaunt squads are exposed. I decide to use it for my advantage and pile in as close as possible to ruins, to roadblock all the warrior-hearthguard blobs as possible.


I get 2 points for Engage, 3 for interrogation and some points for No prisoners (23 wounds so far).

Turn 1. Votanns


I got a bunch of tokens: one for each of two hormies-squat-murderes, one for Warlord Tyrant and one more for a Carnifex on the objective.


Egatrot is not satisfied with the absence of a place to teleport for hearthguards and just moves everything out from hiding, but only 1 unit can get outside of a large ruin from the front, while 20-squat blob moves around on the left and second hearthguards move on the right and end up not in the best position.


Last 2 bikes jump close to my carnifex on the left flank to score Engage, I suppose.


Magic. Nothing interesting here…


Real Votann magic… Errrm… Shooting!

Hearthguards and 20-man blob wipe out hormagaunts! Oh no!!!! And deal around 2 wound to the well-defended Tyrant guards.

3 fat squats kill 1 tyrant guard. They are called Thunderkyns, for reference.


Fan starts here. Bikes start shooting at carnifex with pistols. Okaaaay. No wounds. Then shotguns… I explain that if you shoot with pistols, then you do not shoot with other weapons:) Surely, I do allow to redo the shooting without pistols and they do strip 2 wounds from Carnifex.

10 - man blob aims same target, but not everyone is in range, so rocket, magna-rail and 5 ions. Magna-rail fails. Nice. Rocket fails to hit… At this point Egatrot asks to use an «ANCESTRAL SENTENCE = full rr to hit» stratagem. Okaaaaay. No biggie. I do allow. The Magna rail is also rerolled here… and it wounds, but I do roll a 6. Lucky me. But rocket also wounds and after shooting Carnifex is down to 2 wounds.


So the last shooting possible for Carnifex is the a Champion with a bolter. 4 shots, 2+ hit, 5+ wound. Got 2 saves on 3+ and 2 wounds remaining… I fail both, reroll one for CP and fail… It will cost me points…


Khal strips 4 wounds from Warlord Tyrant with his relic bolter.


3 points for Grind (damn saves for Carnifex!), 0 for engage, 1 for Monsters killing.

(here I forgot that characters do not count for Engage, so we counted points for quaters, but shouldn’t, obviously)


Current score: 5 - 4


Turn 2. Tyranids


Time for Imperative from Zoan’s: 4++ for monsters and 5++ for others.


Rerolls and +1 to-hit for righmost carnifex, and rr 1’s for the leftmost.


Shardgullet tyrant advances towards the closest hearthguards, leftmost carnifex goes for last bikers, while Zoeys and Balethorn tyrant go to the center, aiming at fat-squats. 


Tyrannocyte comes in dead center with pyrovores boiling out with hot surprizes for squat-warriors. No CP’s for intercept, so all Pyro’s are in range and have LoS:)


Magic.

Interrogation pass.

Zoeys do their magic and 3 fat-squats disappear right away:)

Tyrant with smite and Scream make 2 hearthguards disappear.

I toss out FnP for leftmost Carnifex and onslaught for Shardgullet tyrant.


Shooting.

Barbecue time! Pirovores are more than 12 inches away, so 3+ save for warriors in cover. I manage to kill 8 of them with all the flamers + Tyrranocyte shooting + carnifex’s heavy venom cannon (I don’t want to shoot down a biker and become out of charge range!).


Two tyrants and buffed for to-hit’s carnifex kill just 2 hearthguards from the furthermost unit. Not much, not much… Could do better!


Charge!!


And now I remember that I DID NOT CAST PAROXYSM!!! Silly my, but no turning back! 5-hearthguards with full rr’s overwatch me… but I’m good on saves and FnP’s here, loosing only 2 wounds. Managed to reach them. 


Also try to charge last 2 warriors with pyrovores and get a lucky 10 on one squad!


Tyrant stomps to dust all but 1 hearthguards, while pyrovores devour last 2 warriors. Nice:)


Carnifex rolls 4 wounds for Bikers and… alls 5++ passed! Both bikers are alive! WTF?!?!?


I got 2 for Engage, 3 for Interrogation, something for No prisoners. And I’ve controlled 2 objectives and more than an opponent, so got 12 for Primary.

(actually we’ve written 8 for my Primary here, cause I didn’t understood at that moment that Votanns had only 1 objective, so I controlled more!)


Total score: 22 - 4


Turn 2. Votanns


Short legs means that not all the 20-man blob is able to get LoS for closest tyrant for shooting, but magna-rails managed…

Bikes fall back and can shoot for 1 CP.

Last unit of fat-squats arrive from reserve on the left flank close to the carnifex.


I failed to properly screen my deployment and 5 man hearthguard squad found a place to fit in between hormies and a Carnifex on the right.


Shooting.

20-man warrior squad brings Shardgullet tyrant down to 4 wounds. Relic bolter do the rest, killing the tyrant.


Bikers strip Carnifex down to 3 wounds. Not bad! I don’t know why, but only one fat-squat shoot at carnifex, while 2 shoot at hormies. I loose half of hormagaunt unit and nothing for carnifex, pretty expectable!

5-man hearthguard downs the rightmost carnifex to 4 wounds. Bearable.


Charge!

Fat-squats make a charge for carnifex… WHY?!?!?! All of them are dead at the end of the phase, obviously.

Hearthguards charge hormagaunts, lucky 9 again. Hormies are wiped, while my objective is taken. No luck here!

Kahl and solo hearthguard charge tyrant guards, dealing just 2 wounds and nothing in return, but the objective is contested now!

20-man blob charges pyrovores… deal 2 wounds, lost a few warriors in return…. but they get within 6 of another table quater, so lost a point for Engage.


Scores: 4 for primary, 2 for engage, 2 for monsters 0 for Grind (fat-squats sacrifice was legendary!)

(actually we have written +3 for grind here, don’t ask me why, I can’t remember it clearly:)

Total count: 22 Tyr - 12 LoV


The worst here is that we started slowly and the round is just 2.45 and we are running out of time. And no chess clock, so I speed up and start neglecting minor details…


Turn 3. Tyranids


I get charge after fall back!


Left flank. Carnifex shoots at bikes, then charges bikes and…. Killing one!!! Kurrrwa!


Right flank. Carnifex charges and kills a terminator, while Kahl kills tyrant guards.


Center. Pyrovores fall back and will be able to charge back. Second pyrovore put warriors aflame, the both pyrovore squads charge in, leaving  just 5 alive from a 20-squat blob.


My deployment. Zoeys smite, Tyrant smite… Only 1 hearthguard is down (4 left, not good, could be much-much better!). Tyrant charges in… and is stripped down to 2 wounds with overwatch! OMG! I use TRUMPLING CHARGE strat and… 


I roll «1». And then Tyrant kills ZERO hearthguards, while they kill my warlord in return. SERIOUSLY?!


So I get like 3 for Engage, +3 points for No prisoners and 0 for interrogation (cause in a hurry I positioned all my character psykers out of LoS to opponent characters. My bad… And only 4 for primary.


Total score: 29 - 12


Turn 3. Votanns


Left flank, last bike kills me a Carnifex. LoL.


Right flank. Champion joins a close combat, doing nothing to a carnifex, While Kahl kills tyrant guards. Carnifex kills Kahl.


Center - hearthguards kill 2 zoanthropes. Fine.


Scores: 12 for primary (lucky hearthguards, super lucky biker!). 3 points for monsters, 2 for Engage (thanks to biker again!), 3 for Grind (thanks to solo kurwa-biker!).


Total score: 29 - 32 (a close game, cause I have also No prisoners points)



Turn 4. Tyranids


I get 8 points for primary, cause my Carnifex is on objective, while champion is not.


Left flank. Tyrannocyte goes for a biker.


Opponents deployment zone. Pyrovores flame and charge warriors, so no more left there!


Zoey and Neurothrope… I’ve smited Champion to death. Interrogation? Don’t care:) Actually, my fault:)

Tyrannocyte charges biker. I use Trumpling charge stratagem, on 2+ he is DEAD…. DEAD? I roll «1». 6 attacks, 2 wounds with -2 dmg 2. One fail and he is DEAD… DEAD? Both saves are passed! O żesz kurwa ja pierdolę!


I get + 2 for Engage, 0 Interrogation, about 0 for No prisoners…


Total score: 39 - 32 


Turn 4. Votanns


Bike hides from Tyrannicyte but controls the objective with obsec. Hearthguards bring down last zoey.

Champion bring down last Carnifex.


Scores. 8 for Primary, 0 for Engage, 0 for Monsters, 3 for Grind.


Total score: 39 - 44


Turn 5. Tyranids


I get 8 for primary. Why? Because of a biker-squat!


Tyrannocyte with Trumpling charge rolls more than 1 and kills the kurwa-biker! Nice! 


2 for Engage, 0 for Interrogation, 1 more point for No prisoners.

(We’ve written down 3 to me for Engage somehow… that’s how it looks when you’re in a hurry!)


Total should be like 49-40.


Turn 5. Votanns


Nothing interesting, just controlling an objective. for 4 points and getting another 3 Grind points.


I get +12 for No prisoners for killing more than 100 wounds.


Should be like this: 61 - 51. With all my mistakes taken with the math during the game we finished with a 58-54 score. We were so much in a hurry, so have fucked up a lot of things:) Have to take more Polish lessons, cause mine is rather basic at the moment, so it slows the game and causes trouble with mutual understanding :)


Nevertheless, the overall game was as friendly as possible, with a lot of fun and I’ve got a solid butthurt from late game dice rolls:) So, it was memorable for sure:)


Have to use a chess-clock later on even with friendly opponents, feels like I became a bit slow with age and taking into account a long break due to relocation. :)
